Govt accepted JnU protesters’ demands: UGC chairman

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof SMA Faiz has said the government accepted the demands of the protesting students of Jagannath University (JnU).
“The government has accepted all the demands raised by the students of Jagannath University,” he said on Friday evening, May 16, after arriving at the protest site near Kakrail Mosque intersection in Dhaka.
Prof Faiz broke the students’ hunger strike by offering them water.
He said the authorities had been working throughout the day to resolve the issue. “The UGC is like a family—we will work together to address everything. We are committed to implementing all your demands.”
The move came hours after JnU students began a mass hunger strike around 3:45pm to press home their four-point demand.
The demands are granting housing allowance for 70 per cent students of JnU starting from the 2025–26 fiscal year until adequate accommodation is ensured; full proposed budget for the university without cuts; immediate approval and implementation of the university’s second campus in the next Ecnec meeting; and justice for the police personnel responsible for attacking teachers.
